Activated Carbon For Ponds

In the realm of water purification and treatment, activated carbon stands as a silent hero, working its magic to enhance water quality and ensure a refreshing, clean supply. In this blog post, we'll delve into the fascinating world of activated carbon, exploring its properties, applications, and the myriad ways it contributes to elevating the purity of our water.
Understanding Activated Carbon
Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is a porous form of carbon with a massive surface area, making it highly effective for adsorption. This porous structure is what lends activated carbon its remarkable ability to capture and remove impurities. The activation process involves a slow pyrolysis heating of carbon-rich materials, such as wood, peat, coconut shells, or sawdust.

Water Filtration:
Activated carbon is widely used in water filtration systems to remove contaminants, such as chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sediment, and unpleasant odors or tastes.
It acts as a "chemical sponge," attracting and binding impurities to its surface, leaving behind cleaner and clearer water.
The porous nature of activated carbon is particularly effective in adsorbing organic compounds that may be present in water, including pesticides, herbicides, and industrial pollutants.
This makes it a crucial component in water treatment plants and home filtration systems alike.
Decolorization
Activated carbon is employed in the decolorization of water by adsorbing colored impurities. This is especially helpful if your pond is plagued by tannins from leaves, seeds, or mulch. These can turn your pond water a brown, tea color. Besides draining and replacing the water, activated charcoal is the next best solution for this problem.
Cost-Effective
In comparison to some advanced water treatment technologies, activated charcoal is a cost-effective solution for many common water quality issues. It should not be your only method of filtering your pond. A properly sized biological and mechanical filter is crucial. But at a price point of $25-$50 per filter, it's an inexpensive filtration upgrade to protect your finned friends from a wide range of pollutants of impurities.

High Quality Source
Not all activated carbon is made alike and most of what's on the market for ponds is in very small, overpriced quantities. The activated charcoal we offer our clients is sourced from Biochar Now in Colorado and comes in bulk sizes. They are a reputable company that supplies a broad range of industries. Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs even featured them in an episode!
